Chef Paul Shufelt Wins Gold Medal Plates Edmonton

Local chef displays culinary talent to take top prize at prestigious event

EDMONTON, AB, November 5th 2013–Chef Paul Shufelt continues to prove his culinary prowess, taking home the gold award at the prestigious Edmonton 2013 Gold Medal Plates competition with an elegant and inventive dish that left judges wowed.

Going head-to-head with ten of Edmonton’s finest culinary masters, Chef Paul Shufelt cooked up a delicious pomegranate braised Tangle Ridge Ranch lamb with chanterelle mushroom, faro risotto, and baby candy cane beets, paired with Mission Hill Family Estate 2010 Select Lot Collection Syrah. The result was one that stayed true to his signature “comfort food with a contemporary twist” approach, winning judges over in categories of visual presentation, texture, taste, wine compatibility, originality, and wow factor.

“I’m extremely honoured to have received this award,” says Chef Paul Shufelt, “It’s a humbling experience competing alongside some of the city’s most talented chefs while, at the same time, supporting such a brilliant cause.”

Held annually, Gold Medal Plates is the ultimate celebration of Canadian excellence in food, wine, athletic achievement, and entertainment. Proceeds from the event go to the Canadian Olympic Foundation, supporting programs that further Canadian high performance athletes’ pursuit of excellence on the world stage. This year’s event marked the largest Gold Medal Plates ever held, with a noteworthy group of both guests and judges in attendance.

Chef Paul Shufelt will go on to compete at the Canadian Culinary Championships, the Gold Medal Plates Finale, in Kelowna on February 7th and 8th, 2014.
